SSFA Veterans Fishing Day Volunteer Opportunity

The SSFA Veteran Fishing Day is August 5, 2023. This is our largest event of the year and demands the largest amount of volunteers. Please see the description below for volunteer opportunities. We will have a captains and volunteers meeting on Friday, August 5 at 6:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Marquette where we will go over in detail the event and prepare you for your volunteer position. Please leave a message in the comments area about what position you would like to volunteer for. Please feel free to volunteer for more than one position and make a day of giving back to these military heroes.

Location: Lakeview Arena

Hours 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., Friday, August 4

Harbor / Launch Coordinator: Vets will be arriving as early as 7:00 a.m. to meet up with their captains and go fishing for the day.  We need a coordinator at each launch to assist them with finding their captains.  You will have a list of the vets that are departing from your location, and you will just help them find their captain.  You will also have a master list of all vets, their assigned captains and what launch they are supposed to depart from.  This will help with any confusion of a vet arriving at the wrong launch.

Location: Launch sites

Volunteers needed: 5

Hours: 7:00-9:00 a.m., Saturday, August 5

Harbor / Launch Assistant: Your job will be to assist a harbor coordinator in getting the vets to their assigned captains.  You will also provide any assistance they need in getting down ramps, docks, launches, or into boats.

Location: Launch sites

Volunteers needed: 5

Fish Collection and Offloading: After fishing is completed there will be a boat parade in the Lower Harbor at 1:00 p.m.  During the parade, the vets will be offloading their fish along the bin wall.  We will need assistants helping the boats on and off the wall with provided dock hooks. You will also lower a bin into the boat where the vets can load their fish and then hand the bin back to you.  The fish will be taken to Thills Fish House for processing.

Location: Lower Harbor

Volunteers needed: 4

Hours: 12:30 - 2:30 p.m., Saturday, August 5

Fish Cleaning and processing: Once the fish have been offloaded and collected, they will be processed at Thills Fish House.  We will need people to help clean and process the fish.  They will be then divided equally and packaged in individual coolers to be distributed to all the vets. The coolers will be transported to Lakeview Arena for distribution.

We will also be cleaning and tearing down tables and chairs upon completion of the day.

 Volunteer

Welcome and thanks for your interest in working with South Shore Fishing Association. We are an organization based on volunteers. Without the dedication of our board of directors, committee members, and volunteers South Shore wouldn’t be able to continue to do what we do for our fishing community. If your a person who finds value in helping out then we probably have a position for you! We have a couple ways you can get involved, please see below for a brief description of our volunteer opportunities, If you want more detailed explanation of what a volunteer position would entail, please contact SSFAboard906@gmail.com.

Board Of Directors:

Becoming a board member is our most involved volunteer opportunity. The board of directors is responsible for the overall operations of South Shore. We meet once a month for a 2 hour meeting to discuss and plan the annual events of SSFA. We also spend time as volunteers at the events. The board is comprised of multiple board members, event directors, officers, and a chairman. There are opportunities to join and just help out as a board member or take it a step further and become an officer or an event director. We keep our meeting fun and in a social setting. Its a great way to learn more about our fishing community, meet new people, network, and have the opportunity to positively impact our local fishing community. If your a motivated individual who can dedicate a few hours a month and want to join our board please register below. We do most of our event planning in the winter months so we can all enjoy the short summer season we have in the U.P.

All tournament Committee:

This committee is charged with the overall operations of all tournaments and derby’s that South Shore hosts. This includes Teal Lake Ice Fishing Derby, Spring Shootout, Woman’s And Children’s Derby, and the Fall Classic fishing tournament. The committee meets as needed throughout the year to discuss and detail the operations of each event. If you feel you can positively impact and help advance these events then please register below.
